Long ago, in a small village, there lived a clever spider named Anansi. People often said that Anansi was the smartest creature in the world. One day, he heard that all the wisdom of the world had been gathered into a single pot. This pot was very special, because it contained every piece of knowledge anyone had ever known. Anansi wanted this wisdom for himself. He thought, “If I have all the wisdom, I will be greater than everyone else.” So he went to find the pot. After a long search, he finally found it. It was just as amazing as he had imagined. Without wasting time, he took the pot and decided to hide it somewhere safe. Anansi did not want to share the wisdom with anyone. He believed that wisdom was too valuable to be shared. So he looked for a place where no one could find it. After thinking carefully, he chose the top of a very tall tree. “No one will look for it there,” he said to himself.
However, climbing the tree was not easy. Anansi tied the pot to his stomach so he could carry it while climbing. But the pot kept getting in his way. Every time he tried to climb higher, the pot bumped against the tree and made it difficult for him to move.
As Anansi struggled, his young son, Ntikuma, stood below and watched. After a while, Ntikuma called out, “Father, why don’t you tie the pot to your back instead? It would make climbing much easier.”
Anansi stopped for a moment. He had been trying so hard to climb the tree, yet he had not thought of this simple idea. Slowly, he climbed down and looked at his son. He felt surprised and a little upset. “How can it be,” he wondered, “that I have all the wisdom in this pot, but my son still has a good idea that I did not think of?”
This thought made Anansi angry. He realized that even though he had tried to collect all the wisdom in the world, he had not truly succeeded. Wisdom could not be kept in one place, and it could not belong to just one person.
In his frustration, Anansi threw the pot down from the tree. The pot broke into many pieces, and all the wisdom inside it spread across the land. From that day on, everyone in the world had a share of wisdom.
People say that this is why no one person knows everything. Each person has their own ideas and understanding, and we can all learn from one another. As for Anansi, he learned an important lesson: wisdom grows when it is shared, not when it is hidden.
And so, the story of Anansi reminds us that even the cleverest among us can still learn something new.
